2015_beachIn my previous blog post, I was discussing my learnings from 2014 – and possibly what I will take with me into 2015.

This year, I am not going to be setting any ‘resolutions’ per se, but, I do have a load of goals and ambitions that I want to accomplish both in the short term, during 2015 and the longer term.

How many times have you heard people say “Last year was awful – I don’t want to go through that again” or “I didn’t get everything accomplished that I wanted to last year.” So to overcompensate for these disappointments, they begin to make more resolutions to rectify these letdowns.

However, by the time the calendar flips over to the 1st of February (let’s be kind and even suggest March) statistically, a whopping 47% of us have reneged and our many of out well-intended resolutions have fallen by the wayside.

So why is that? Why do we lose our resolve so quickly?

Well, NLP suggests that it’s all about what we focus on. Too many of us are focusing on what we want to avoid, rather than what we want to achieve.

You may have heard of the Laws of Attraction. The idea – is that you can get all that you have ever wanted – just by thinking in a certain way. The power of your thoughts can improve your life. We do however, have to be very intentional and deliberate about the way we think; about what we wish for and in turn, we will attract just what we are focusing on. NLP however, takes it further and suggests that along with just the positive thinking – we need to take positive action too.

So the trick is – to delete those negative voices in our head and replace them with more positive thoughts. We have to turn our attentions to how to achieve the results we want, more positively.

The Conscious Mind – the bit of our brain that says for example “I am too fat” or “I am broke” – will invariably buy into the fact that we aren’t happy – but it is how we convince our Unconscious Mind to accept the necessary changes that we need to make, in order to get the results we truly want.

The Unconscious Mind is not the ‘baddie’ in all this. It is the Power-House in our brain. It has been shaped by years and years of experience and exposed to millions of bits of information on a daily basis; all of which it stores. It is the Unconscious Mind that affects our behaviour and actions – so to get it to play ball – we have to change our thinking.

“We cannot solve your problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
~ Albert Einstein ~

A word of warning – the Unconscious Mind does not understand negatives. Don’t think of a Pink Elephant ( catch my drift? )

So rather than say :

“I don’t want to be in debt”, a more positive framing would be, “This year I shall have more financial freedom”
or
“This job is making me miserable”, it would be more productive to say, “This year I am going to have a really fulfilling career.”

Once you have stated what you want and what you hope for – your Unconscious Mind and The Universe start to work out a way to make this happen.

So I guess the takeaway here is – to make 2015 a year to remember, for all the right reasons, think about all the milestones and goals that you want to achieve – rather than the things that you want to avoid.

So if you are looking for a more productive year, a more productive life – give me a shout and we can see how I can help you.
